RNA Hypothesis
A hypothesis that has gained much support recently is the idea that RNA was the original storage for genetic material rather than DNA. It can replicate itself even without enzymes, unlike its counterpart DNA which needs enzymes. The enzymes that RNA uses are called ribozymes. Even so RNA does not store genetic information nearly as well as DNA which is probably the reason RNA stopped storing and replicating like DNA does so much better.
